  A crooked horizon can be very annoying in an image if we didn't plan it that way.  Whether it happened because we shot the photo too fast or conditions would not allow us to compose it correctly the fact remains the photo is ruined.  In the image above for instance we all know the ocean could not tilt like this so we find it very distracting.

The fix is quite simple in PhotoFiltre Studio.  To complete this task you will need a knowledge of the Grid Tools Palette.  If you are not familiar with it review the tutorial here first before you begin.

Click the left image above for a larger version if you would like to follow along.

1)  Open your image in PhotoFiltre.

     Menu = Layer / Insert new background

Click yes.

2)  Menu = Tools / Preferences / Tools Palette and Grid

     Alignment = left
     Cell Size =20
     Color = Black

3)  Menu = View / Show Grid

To the right is what I have so far.  My photo with a grid over it.

4)  Select your photo in the Layers Palette (Layer 1).

     Menu = Layer / Transform / Transform free

Now just play with the Angle Setting until the horizon lines up with the grid.  In this instance use a setting of:

Angle = 4 or 6

4 if you want the beach line to be straight 6 if you want the water on the horizon straight.  Either works fine.  I am going with 4.

Your horizon should now be straight like mine to the right.  Now all we need to do is crop it so that the edges are straight.

5)  Select the Rectangle Selection Tool and draw a selection over your photo so that there is no white showing like mine to the right.  I also moved the right side over a bit to crop out the person completely rather than splitting him in half.  This would be another very annoying aspect of out photo.

6)  Menu = Image / Crop

Crop Layer
We now have a straight horizon and are ready to touch-up our photo even more to make it a great shot. Straightened Horizon
